We present a new determination of the local interstellar radiation field (LISRF) from optical to near-IR based for the first time on data in these wavelengths. We consider available all-sky surveys (Hipparcos, Tycho-2, USNO-A2, COBE/DIRBE) for this estimation and discuss the various aspects of a local determination of the interstellar radiation field. The LISRF is widely used to understand the heating of dust in the solar neighbourhood, and also enters in the normalisation of synthetic galaxy spectra models. Until now, although well constrained by the IRAS data in the infra-red (Desert et al. 1990), the optical part of the LISRF is derived from the work of Mathis et al. (1983), which determined it indirectly through a model (since there was no reliable observations at this time). We study the dependence of the LISRF with the Galactic latitude (in 1/sin(b)), and develop a Galactic toy model to understand the behaviours of these different data sets. This modelling assumes an exponential disc with standard parameters, a mass-luminosity relationship for the stars, and a Present Day Mass Function. In parallel, we test the coherence of this toy model with the Hipparcos data, and compare our LISRF estimate with a synthetic spectra computed with the Hipparcos Input Catalogue.
