The compact H II region S235A has been mapped in the wavelength range 1.6-20 micron. The infrared radiation peaks on a stellar object which has previously been identified as the ionizing source of the nebula. The near infrared radiation exhibits roughly the same spatial distribution as the radio continuum but is an order of magnitude brighter than the expected gas emission. This is interpretated as an evidence for a clumpy or filamentary structure throughout the ionized region. The 10 micron and 20 micron photometry combined with far infrared observations indicates that the dust within the H II region only absorbs 10-20 percent of the UV-visible light from the ionizing star and the emission nebula. The extinction towards the ionizing star is derived and in the range 0.8-3.5 micron the wavelength dependence closely follows that of the normal interstellar extinction. A new infrared source was discovered two minutes of arc north of S235A. It coincides with a faint nebulosity proposed to be a Herbig-Haro object.
