The authors present spectrophotometry of the active galaxies NGC 5506 and 7314, covering the wavelength region 5300 Å to 1 μm. An emission line present in both objects is identified as O I λ8446, excited by a Bowen fluorescence mechanism. This line is strong evidence for the existence of high-density optically thick gas in these two narrow-line X-ray-emitting galaxies. A strong red emission feature, also seen in a number of Seyfert 1 galaxies, whose origin is at present uncertain is also described.
