The 4430 Å diffuse interstellar absorption band is found to be present in the spectra of reddened early-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This is observed for stars having the usual SMC extinction law with no 2200 Å feature, as well as for a star having an abnormal extinction curve with a strong 2200 Å feature. If the interpretation of the usual SMC interstellar extinction law in terms of a very small proportion of graphite grains is valid then this result suggests that the 4430 Å band is not directly associated with graphite.
