Possible causes of cosmic-ray intensity variations in the earth's
magnetosphere are examined. The amplification of the solar-diurnal
variation of the muon component of cosmic rays of interplanetary origin
during disturbed conditions in the solar wind near the earth is ruled
out as an explanation.
