A brief description of the operating principles of a charge-coupled detector (CCD) array is given, and some recent applications to atmospheric observations in the far solar system are discussed. Attention is given to the contribution of CCD arrays in detecting changes in the aerosol distribution of the atmospheres of Neptune and Uranus. CCD observations in 1983 showed that the rotation of Neptune is direct with a period of 17 hours 50 minutes plus or minus 5 minutes.
