A deep 2-μm survey, JHK photometry, and 65- and 130-μm observations of the northern block in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud are presented. Several new embedded pre-main-sequence stars were found, implying a star-formation efficiency of at least 25% for this portion of the cloud. The authors find evidence for star formation to have taken place preferentially on the perimeter of a dense core in the cloud, rather than in the core itself. There is evidence that some of this activity may have been triggered by an earlier Ae star phase of HD 97300 in which a mass-loss bubble induced star formation along its juncture with the dense core.
