A relation is derived for the mass transfer rate in a cataclysmic binary which takes into account, in addition to the systemic loss of angular momentum, the loss of orbital angular momentum due to accretion by the white dwarf primary. This additional sink of angular momentum turns out to enhance (but not to drive) the mass transfer. Specific results are obtained for three cataclysmic binaries, by applying the relation to DQ Her, EX Hya, and AM CVn, together with the upper and lower limits for the mass transfer rate derived from the observed spin-up rate. The mass transfer rates in DQ Her and EX Hya, as constrained by the observed spin-up data, lend strong support to current ideas about the occurrence of the period gap, according to which the mass transfer rates are high above the gap and low below it.
