New CCD radial velocity curves of RT Aur and SZ Tau are combined with former radial velocity and photometric observations to derive the distances, absolute magnitudes and radii of these Cepheids by the surface brightness method of Barnes and Evans. Good agreement with the values predicted by recent period-luminosity and period-radius relationships is found. Spectroscopic and photometric evidence suggests that RT Aur and SZ Tau are single stars, contradicting former suggestions that both stars may be binaries. The pulsation masses obtained from the surface brightness radii support former evidence that this kind of mass estimate yields values which are smaller than theoretical or evolutionary masses. It is shown that SZ Tau is a classical Cepheid and not a Population II Cepheid as suggested by several authors. The distance of SZ Tau and its systemic radial velocity are in excellent agreement with the distance of the open cluster NGC 1647 and the mean radial velocity of the cluster stars, strenghtening the case for cluster membership of this Cepheid.
