Scientific paper

Scientific and technical aspects of the ROSAT X-ray all sky survey are outlined. It is expected to observe 100,000 quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Sensitivity is comparable to HEAO 2 medium survey overall, but can be 10 times greater around the ecliptic poles. The ROSAT X-ray optics consist of a fourfold nested mirror system of Wolter type 1 with 83 cm aperture having an intrinsic resolution of a few arcseconds. The focal plane assembly comprises two position sensitive proportional counters (PSPC) and one high resolution imager, mounted on a carousel. The PSPC is used for the sky survey.
