Current and future space research by ESA and the Netherlands is surveyed and illustrated with drawings of spacecraft, diagrams and graphs, and sample astronomical images. The value of space observations for the discovery and characterization of new types of emission objects is stressed, with discussion of stellar accretion and gravitational collapse to form neutron stars or black holes, correlation studies of the Galaxy at different wavelengths, and Exosat observations of SNRs. Consideration is given to the observatories under development (including Space Telescope, Hipparcos, ISO, and Gamma-Ray Observatory), observatories in the study phase (solar observatory, high-resolution 10-200-nm spectrograph, multimirror X-ray telescope, and 100-1000-micron telescope), the balance of the overall ESA program, the role of space development as a driver of technological progress, the Netherlands-Italy X-ray satellite project SAX, and microgravity research in biology and materials science using Spacelab/Eureca/Space Station facilities.
