Existing ground-based observational data which support a model for a layered Jovian atmosphere are reexamined analytically to determine if the multilayer model is valid. The variations in the intensity of light scattered from a layered, anisotropic medium are modeled, with account taken of absorption and scattering by gas molecules and aerosol particles. CH4 bands recorded from the disk center are compared with prediction from a two-layer model. The results support a stratified atmosphere model, which must be considered in any further observations of the Jovian cloud deck. Further ground-based spectropolarimetry of the various Jovian latitudes and the CH4 absorption bands, together with continued development of the numerical models with account taken of inhomogeneities, will aid in refining the structure of the Jovian atmospheric layers.
