STARE Doppler spectral data of 1-m auroral irregularities during westward electrojet conditions are analyzed. Narrow and broad spectra are observed simultaneously from the same scattering volume and associated with irregularities moving in different directions. The type of spectrum depends critically on the flow angle; the narrow spectra are considerably more stable in space and time than the broad. The relative scattering cross section sigma(R) is closely related to the electron drift velocity. A power law relationship is found between sigma(R) and the radial drift velocity. Both spectral types are usually asymmetric, with narrow spectra almost always asymmetric for drift velocities greater than about 400 m/s. The narrow spectrum width is rather insensitive to changes in drift velocity as compared to the broad spectrum width, which increases linearly with the magnitude of electron drift.
