The various topics covered at the first International Astronomical Union Symposium on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) are summarized. The discovery of at least 60 nearby stars with dust envelopes by the IAS spacecraft was noted, and actual imaging of planets in other stellar systems is expected to be possible with the Space Telescope. The possibility that stellar systems acquire organic matter during passages through interstellar molecular clouds was discussed, as were the periodic extinctions and appearances of species in the over-3 billion year history of the earth. Past, ongoing, and planned SETI searches with radiotelescopes were described. The limitations on the abilities of current researchers to predict the behavior of advanced, interstellar-colonizing civilizations relative to terrestrial standards were explored. The SETI projects, being multidisciplinary, are concluded to have opened a new field, bioastronomy, which will help define the position and role of humans and the earth relative to the Universe.
