Problems involved in the use of various astronomical distance techniques to determine the distance to the Hyades are addressed. It is shown how the original distance determination using the moving cluster technique had a serious error due to mistakes concerning the proper motions of cluster stars. The use of evidence from binary stars to obtain an improved distance estimate is discussed.
