Instabilities, Magnetic Fields, Mhd, Galaxies: Jets
Scientific paper
In this paper the stability of jets during formation is examined, using an ideal, three-dimensional, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code. Previous work by ourselves suggests that the axial magnetic field is far more important than the azimuthal field in the collimation of the jet. In this paper it is found that this axial magnetic field stabilizes MHD modes in the jets. Also the formation mechanism is found to be reasonably robust. Small perturbations (<5 per cent) in the initial density of the disc and the seed magnetic field do not disrupt the jet.
