The operating principle of the Halley Multicolor Camera of the Giotto probe to comet Halley is reviewed, and the hardware and 35-kbyte software of the three-processor computer system developed to control the camera are characterized and illustrated with diagrams. Consideration is given to the overall structure of the hardware, the mailbox-type coupling among the microprocessors, the acquisition and tracking preprocessors, the bulk memory (with capacity for storage of four images), the signal-processing software, the tracking program, the mechanical construction, and the heat losses (totaling 7.2 W at maximum activity levels).
