The optical emission lines in spectra of the northern jet of the Crab Nebula form ringlike velocity ellipses. The spectrograph slit was oriented perpendicularly to the long axis of the jet and centered near the jet's midpoint and base. At both locations, the major and minor axes of the velocity ellipses measure 45 arc sec (= jet diameter) x 720 km/s. Previous work on the jet is reviewed and the new result is used to constrain theories about the nature of the jet. It is proposed that the jet is an accelerated beam of hot plasma, and its dynamics are discussed.
