Spectra of the faint RR Lyrae stars found in a recent survey (Saha 1984) with the Palomar 48 inch (1.2 m) Schmidt telescope were obtained with the double spectrograph at the Palomar 200 inch (5 m) telescope. These spectra were used to derive the chemical abundances of the individual RR Lyrae stars through the Preston Delta S index and also to determine the line-of-sight velocities of these objects to a typical accuracy of 30 km/s. Spectrophotometry in the wavelength range from 3700 to 7100 A was done using the SIT vidicon detector spectrograph on the 60 inch (1.5 m) telescope on Palomar mountain. Since the effective temperature and gravity of ab-type RR Lyraes are predictable, the spectrophotometry could be compared with appropriate model atmospheres to determine the interstellar reddening and extinction. This lays the groundwork for studying the distant halo of the Galaxy with these RR Lyrae stars as probes.
