Arp 220 (IC 4553), a peculiar galaxy at a redshift of 0.018, is remarkable in that (1) it has the highest infrared excess of any cataloged galaxy, and (2) it contains the most luminous masers yet discovered. Although its total luminosity is well within the domain of quasars it appears optically undistinguished. Previous observations have revealed characteristics of both starburst and Seyfert nuclei, and several lines of independent evidence suggest an obscured quasar/Seyfert nucleus surrounded by a starburst region. Here are presented high dynamic range VLA observations of the nuclear region at three frequencies, which expose two galactic nuclei in the core of Arp 220, indicating that the Seyfert activity has been initiated by a recent merger.
