No other NASA scientific spacecraft has attracted so much attention during its development than the Hubble Space Telescope. It will present a leap in orders of magnitude in observational capability in optical astronomy, opening up new areas of investigation. Experience in its operation will also determine the wisdom of the "great observatories" approach that NASA has assumed for the major astronomy and astrophysics disciplines.
