The development of the cosmic distance scale is reviewed and discussed. The work of Hubble on galaxies and on the determination of distances is considered. The two distinct approaches to the measurement of cosmic distances of Sandage and Tammann and of De Vaucouleurs, which have produced two different values for the size of the universe, are explained. Recent advances which have tended to place the correct value of the Hubble constant in the range spanned by the two opposing scales are reviewed.
