The main components of a Nd-glass laser designed for use in a mass spectrometer are briefly described, and the performance characteristics of the laser are examined. A mathematical model is developed for the multiple-pass laser amplifier which can be used for the overall optimization of the laser and for the prediction of its performance under various operating conditions. The possibility of the remote analysis of the surface composition of Phobos, a satellite of Mars, is cited as an example of laser mass spectrometry applications.
