Longitudinal variations in the nighttime midlatitude topside ionosphere are analyzed for summer and winter periods of high solar activity. Attention is given to conditions leading to a high amplitude of longitudinal variations of the topside ionosphere, including variations of the height (up to 150 km) and density (up to 7-8 times) of the F2-layer maximum at near-midnight winter hours. These high amplitudes can result from high values of the zonal wind velocity and intense latitudinal gradients and longitudinal variations of the meridional wind-velocity projection. In the summer, the main contribution to the longitudinal variations is made by variations of electron density with longitude before sunset, when the zonal wind velocity is maximal.
