The propagation of Rossby solitons in the thermosphere at an altitude of about 100 km is examined on the basis of data from 19 midlatitude and low-latitude vertical-sounding stations for magnetically quiet days. The velocity distribution of neutrals inside the soliton is constructed. The presence of a vertical velocity component is shown to lead to a local change in the ratio of the atomic and molecular components of the thermosphere, manifested as large-scale irregularities of plasma concentration.
