The characteristics of interstellar dust are discussed and the Sun's parent molecular cloud is divided into eight material reservoirs. Then the types of meteorites likely to preserve presolar dust are identified. With these boundary conditions established, the nature and occurrence of putative presolar grains in meteorites is discussed and material which may have formed directly from presolar dust is identified. The focus then shifts to show that the widespread occurrence of processed and unprocessed presolar dust in primitive chondrites is consistent with our knowledge of the early solar system. It is suggested that partial evaporation of presolar dust can explain chemical differences between chondrite classes. A model for chondrule formation consistent with the above concepts is also presented.
