This paper discusses the widely used boundary condition on the tangential stress in accretion discs postulated in the Shakura and Sunyaev (1973) model of accretion discs. It is shown that the value of the viscous energy dissipation calculated from it is unphysical. A new boundary condition is proposed as a viable alternative. Using the new equation it was found that the energy balance in the disc places certain restrictions on the rotational velocity in the disc, leading to a conclusion that substantial deviations from Keplerian velocity may be called for.
