The sources labelled N and M in the molecular complex Sgr B2 were observed in the 6K - 5K line series of the ν8 = 1 vibrationally excited state of the CH3CN molecule. The series was detected only in a 10'' × 14'' (0.41 pc × 0.58 pc) region of N, and none above the noise level in M. A rough estimate for the vibrational excitation temperature of N of about 300 K is obtained. We discuss the excitation mechanism for this line series and differences in the physical conditions between N and M.
