The global luminosity function of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy was determined, using data obtained from COSMOS machine scans of U.K. Schmidt Telescope Unit plates. The luminosity functions in both B and R were used. The Sculptor's luminosity function was compared with those for Galactic globular clusters that have metallicity similar to that of the Sculptor system. Sculptor showed a significantly richer giant branch and a wider horizontal branch than any of the clusters. Sculptor's subgiant branch is matched best by the most metal-poor clusters. A comparison made with theoretical luminosity functions for populations with various main-sequence masses and helium abundances led to a conclusion that Sculptor has a range in the mass of its evolved stars, indicating either a variable mass loss from star to star, or a spread in the turnoff mass (and, therefore, age) of Sculptor stars.
