At present the white-light flares are thought to originate in either (1)
chromospheric condensations, or (2) nonthermal effects in the upper
photosphere, or (3) heating of the temperature minimum region. It is
pointed that none of these by themselves can explain the continuum of
the flares satisfactorily, but a combination of 1) and 2) may do so.
