The 17th magnitude QSO PHL 1226 (zem = 0.404) is close in the sky to several low redshift galaxies. The brightest of these, IC 1746 is an edge-on spiral 55arcsec.4 or 28 h-150kpc away from the line of sight at z = 0.01760±0.0002. A weak absorption line in the QSO spectrum is identified as Ca II K at zabs = 0.01871±0.00005, only 310±20 km s-1 higher than the galaxy central velocity. Two other galaxies were found to be at z = 0.1592±0.0020 and 0.1597±0.0010, and only 24 and 41 h-150kpc from the QSO line of sight. The authors subsequently discovered a strong, saturated Mg II absorption line doublet at zabs = 0.1602±0.0001 in the QSO spectrum, which may be associated with either of these galaxies. The latter appear to belong to a cluster of galaxies whose projected density is 1.8 galaxies per arcmin2.
