The history, objects of research, instruments, underlying theory, and observational evidence of X-ray astronomy are reviewed. Prodigious quantities of energy detected in connection with supernova outbursts, radio galaxies, quasars, pulsars, microwave background radiation, globular clusters, X-ray galaxies, Seyferts, and presumed neutron stars and black holes are discussed, and new methods and equipment (space platforms, improved X-ray telescopes, X-ray imaging systems) are mentioned. X-ray sources Her X-1 and Cen X-3 in binary systems, the anomalous X-ray source Cyg X-1 and arguments on its identification as black hole, the evolutionary position of globular clusters emitting X-rays, the nature of active X-ray-emitting galaxies, and arguments regarding small black holes, massive black holes, and supermassive black holes are discussed.
