The major topics covered are: (1) the formation of the solar system and the primitive atmosphere of the planets; (2) the photochemistry of the present atmospheres of the earth's neighbors (Mars and Venus); (3) evolution of the atmosphere of Mars, earth, Venus, and Mercury; (4) atmospheres of the outer-lying planets. The possibility that the solar system condensed from a nebulosity resembling the observed Orion Nebula is discussed. Photochemical models of the Martian and Venusian atmospheres (including photochemical mist), cycles of various elements and simple compounds, the abundance of ice forms (H2O, CO2, ammonia), and possible seasonal changes are considered. Jupiter is considered as a possible companion of the sun with a planetary system in its own right, and the effect of the gravitational fields of the giant planets on their atmospheres is mentioned.
