The effect of moisture on the reading of an ionization densitometer analogous to that used on the Venera-4 space probe. Results show that the nonmonotonic change in the readings of the Venera-4 ionization densitometer could have been due to the presence of moisture. Possible profiles of the H2O distribution in the night side atmosphere of Venus are given for the altitude range 36 to 51.5 km. A maximum occurs at 39-40 km, where the H2O content is about 3% by volume. The relative volume per cent of moisture tends to decrease in lower layers of the atmosphere. The results support the existence of a cloud layer extending from about 35 to 52 km in the atmosphere of Venus. Differences in the structure of the cloud layer on the day and night sides of the planet are inferred by comparison of the ionization densitometer measurements with profiles of the radio loss coefficient obtained by Mariner-5.
