Cleft is a topological feature of the magnetosphere through which magnetosheath protons and electrons penetrate to ionospheric altitudes. The paper reviews relevant synoptic data, presents recent satellite data on an individual pass basis, and interprets top side ionospheric observations in terms of magnetospheric convection. Only electrons are assumed to be important. As seen from above the F layer, the most obvious effects are an expansion of the top side ionosphere due to heating and the presence of small-scale spatial fluctuations in density. The region of increase is quite often displaced horizontally from the cleft. The cleft sometimes serves as a boundary between a high-density midlatitude F layer and a low-density polar F layer.
