An intrinsic model is developed for the formation of narrow absorption-line systems in QSO spectra, in which it is supposed that a wind from a central source interacts with surrounding enriched material. The model contains only two free parameters, the ambient gas density and the mechanical power output in the wind. It is shown that at some characteristic time catastrophic radiative cooling occurs in swept-up gaseous material, which then condenses into a thin cool shell in which the observed absorption lines originate. It is noted that the dynamics of the model require a high degree of spherical symmetry in the gas distribution about the central source, and that the gross features derived from the model are in good agreement with the observations of 3C 191 and are insensitive to the choice of the two free parameters.
