It is argued that the surprising constancy of the interstellar 10-micron feature, as evidenced both by observations and by theoretical best-fit model calculations, can be used to put some constraint on the nature of interstellar dust. In particular, it is shown that the feature is not produced by crystalline particles and that any amorphous material capable of producing the band must be able to avoid recrystallization to temperatures of at least 1000 K. Observations of the interstellar 18-micron feature are also used to constrain the dust models. The most important dust models proposed to date are critically reviewed in the light of the infrared spectrophotometry and it is concluded that the infrared features could be due to a small number of distinct chemical species rather than amorphous silicates.
