Observations covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum from 1977 to 1979 relating to the physical conditions in extragalactic nonthermal sources are reviewed. Radio, infrared, optical, UV and X-ray spectral data concerning emission properties of extragalactic nonthermal sources are discussed in relation to the magnetic field configurations and strengths, cosmic-ray energy densities, the generation of relativistic particles in the cores, energy transport and the effects of external conditions of the radio source and quasars. It is pointed out that the major efforts have concentrated on the nature of the ultimate source of nonthermal energy, whether by synchrotron, inverse-Compton or electron bremsstrahlung emission, with observations of short-time-scale phenomena and with high resolution, as by VBLI, the most important. An extensive bibliography of relevant papers is also presented.
