Six numerical models of alpha-omega dynamos with cylindrical isorotation surfaces are analyzed to determine whether such models can reproduce basic observational features of the cyclic behavior of the large-scale solar magnetic field. All six models are found to have dipolar as well as quadrupolar oscillatory solutions, and it is shown that the mean field will propagate from higher latitudes toward the equator when the dynamo number is negative in the Northern Hemisphere and positive in the Southern one. Oscillatory solutions for omega x j dynamos are sought, and oscillatory modes are found only for models with radial shear. The phase relation between the poloidal and toroidal components of the mean field predicted by each of the alpha-omega models is compared with the phase relation obtained from magnetograms and butterfly diagrams. It is found that only models with an angular velocity that increases with increasing depth appear to be compatible with the observations.
