We propose UBVRI photometry using CTIO/0.9m for the survey of low mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars around 11 cometary globules (CGs) in the Gum nebula. The Gum nebula is an excellent site to study the influences of high mass (HM) stars on their environment by both terminating and triggering low mass star formation (LMSF). The nebula contains evidence of very energetic HM stars including supernova remnants, the most luminous O star (ζ Pup), a Wolf-Rayet star (gamma)^2 Vel, and two OB associations. It also contains a large number of CGs, in which LMSF has been observed. However there have been no systematic survey for LMSF in this region. We will use PMS stars associated with CGs as tools to probe star formation history in the nebula. Our previous multi-wavelength observations yielded a number of PMS stars around 12 CGs and dark clouds. Here we propose for more optical photometry to complete the survey for LMSF around 11 CGs in west of the Gum nebula. These 11 CGs are likely to be influenced by different ionizing sources than CGs in our previous observations. They all show strong indications of star formation activities in H_(alpha), IRAS, and RASS. From this proposed photometry we will select potential PMS stars from their positions in color-magnitude diagrams, and determine their ages and masses. We will also investigate the spatial correlations between PMS stars and parental or neighboring CGs. We will then compare these properties with those of PMS stars in different CGs, as well as in other well known star forming regions. This survey of PMS stars associated with CGs will provide us essential information to understand the star formation history linking the roles of HM stars and triggered LMSF in different physical conditions.
