The First-Look Survey (FLS) includes early-mission SIRTF imaging of 5 square degrees of sky with 100 times greater sensitivity at 24 (micron) and 70 (mu)m, and with thousandfold greater sky coverage at 8 (micron) than previously achieved. The extragalactic component of the FLS data will uncover thousands of galaxies to z ~ 1, enabling studies of the evolution of starbursts, assessment of the contribution of dusty AGNs, and possibly the detection of new populations. Data to R ~ 25.5 (5σ, 2" aperture) has already been obtained with the KPNO Mosaic camera of the FLS region and a VLA survey (5σ=70-90 (mu)Jy at 1.4 GHz) will provide accurate positions for the FIR sources. We propose here to obtain near-IR (J & K') observations of the FLS with FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 2.1m in 4 nights to bridge the gap in the galaxy SEDs between the R-band optical data and the shortest wavelength IRAC band at 3.6 (mu)m. The near-IR imaging depths are selected to detect and characterize both passively evolving L^* elliptical galaxies and dusty starbursts to z ~ 1.5. These data will also be useful in helping distinguish stars from galaxies. We propose these observations on behalf of the SIRTF project for the benefit of the astronomical community. The principal data products from the ancillary optical, near- infrared and radio observations, as well as the SIRTF observations, will be distributed via the WWW as soon as they are produced and verified.
