As part of the Nearby Stars (NStars)/Space Interferometry Mission Preparatory Science project, we are observing spectroscopically all of the approximately 3600 main-sequence and giant stars with spectral types earlier (hotter) than M0 within a distance of 40 parsecs. These spectra, which we are obtaining with resolutions between 1.5 - 4.5A will be used for three purposes. First, they will be used to obtain homogeneous, precision, MK spectral types. Second, in conjunction with existing medium and broad band photometry and synthetic spectra and fluxes based on Kurucz models, they will be used to derive the basic astrophysical parameters, namely the effective temperature, gravity and metallicity for these stars. Third, these spectra will be used to obtain a measure of the chromospheric activity from the Ca II K-line. We are applying to use the 1.5m CTIO telescope and Cassegrain spectrograph to obtain spectra of the fainter stars (B > 9) in this sample south of DEC=-30°.
