An analysis is made of a complete sample, based on ultraviolet excess without regard to proper motion, of 89 hot white dwarfs. A model of local star formation is constructed, and the rate of star formation, dynamical evolution of mean distances perpendicular to the galactic plane, and white-dwarf cooling curve from Lamb and Van Horn (1975) are then combined to predict satisfactorily the white-dwarf luminosity function. The total local density of white dwarfs is found to be 1.43 plus or minus 0.28 per 1000 cubic parsecs for M(V) less than 12.75.
