A new matrix method for solving the fundamental equation of stellar statistics is proposed: distances and apparent magnitudes are split into a priori equiprobable intervals, and the division leads to an analysis of star counts and space densities on a set of eigenvectors; the space density is then estimated with different conditions of simplicity. This method provides very reliable results, even if the number of stars is small; the possibility of detecting a single local maximum is also discussed. Variation of the observation angle with apparent magnitude is proposed to remove the so-called 'cone effect'; this procedure gives reliable space densities over the whole distance range. As an application of the method, the sample of M dwarf stars from The and Staller (1974) is analyzed for space densities.
