A discussion is made on the long-standing practice of using linear polarization data at all wavelengths in order to compute the Faraday rotation measures for radio galaxies and quasars. An emphasis is made in this paper on the importance of selecting data in a range of wavelengths pertaining to only one physical regime. One particularly useful physical regime (Faraday-thin, one-component) exhibits simple wavelength dependences of its polarization properties and permits modelling of the magnetic field in our own Galaxy.
