The origin of the Beta Cephei pulsation was investigated, using the new opacity coefficients calculated by Iglesias and Rogers (1991) to survey pulsation stability of Beta Cephei envelope models. The models calculated with the use of new opacity tables exhibit pulsational instability in the fundamental radial mode. The driving is caused by the usual kappa-mechanism acting in a zone with temperatures near 2 x 10 exp 5 K, where there is a bump in opacity. The instability arises as a result of a slight surplus of this driving over the damping which takes place in the rest of the star interior, and its occurrence depends on the heavy element content, Z.
