New spectroscopic data confirm previous, less precise observations concerning the nature of this star. Reliable orbital parameters can only be obtained from symmetric, moderately strong emission lines of the highest excitation/ionization potential which are formed closest to the stellar surface. The best line in the spectrum of HD 197406 is the emission line of N IV λ4058. Most other lines show reduced velocity amplitudes and significant phase shifts.
HD 197406 contains a low mass (∼4 Msun), probably compact companion which may be the remnant of a supernova explosion that accelerated the system to its present position about 1000 pc from the Galactic plane.
