Observations by Mezger et al. (1988) of the NGC2024 cloud core showed the existence of six compact dust condensations suggested that these condensations may be isothermal protostars. This paper presents new dust emission maps observed at 1300 microns with the Swedish ESO 15-m-Submm Telescope, and at 870 microns with the IRAM 30-m-Mm-Telescope MRT, providing the highest to date resolution of Theta(A) = 8 arcsec. It is shown that the compact dust condensations are best represented by isothermal protostars in free-fall contraction, where liberation of gravitational energy provides internal heating. It is suggested that the dust condensations are not, or only barely, visible in isotopic CS and CO transitions because molecules have frozen out on dust grains.
