Comparison of the run of polarization at radio and optical wavelengths along the jet of 3C273 reveals the presence of an optically quiet component extending from the outer end of the optical jet back to the radio lobe. We tentatively identify it with the "back-flow" found in numerical simulations of extragalactic radio jets and conclude that Doppler beaming does not seem to be of importance in the outer region of the jet.
