In the first lecture the author begins with a general overview on the formation and structure of neutron stars, and then discusses a few topics in some detail. In order to emphasize also the links to nuclear physics he discusses two entirely different approaches to the equation of state at very high densities. This leads to the question of the maximal mass of a neutron star. In this connection some new work on rotating neutron stars are also mentioned. An important topic is the cooling of neutron stars, which depends on various aspects of neutron star structure and where X-ray astronomy can provide interesting constraints.
